Watering Minds is not a fixed image but a state of flow. Surfaces ripple, dissolve, condense. What appears clear becomes opaque, what distorts suddenly reveals. Sound echoes in the hollow body of the tower, swelling against brutalist walls and circling in resonance. This work tends to the invisible growth of perception. A movement, a filter, a pulse—a way of listening, a way of seeing, a way of being carried.
Project Description
Watering Minds is an audiovisual installation shaped by the shifting nature of water—its fog, its ice, its liquid movement, and the subtle currents within ourselves. Water acts as both metaphor and filter, guiding perception, nurturing thought, and opening space for reflection. The installation unfolds within the hollowed resonance of Viborg’s water tower, where sound and image merge into a sensory environment. Ambient tones and field recordings ripple through the vast reverb of the space, establishing a meditative loop. For the live opening performance, Marcell will disrupt this calm atmosphere with distortion and electric guitar, becoming a force of disturbance within the otherwise harmonic soundscape.
Visuals and Sound
The visuals are built on a dialogue between analogue and digital processes, juxtaposed in two distinct layers. Each frame is hand-crafted—drawn and painted on paper using markers, spray paint, and custom-made inks. These materials reference both traditional graphic techniques and the raw energy of street art and graffiti. Using stencils, metal grids, marble glue, and found objects, Marcell generates textured, tactile backgrounds whose origins are deliberately ambiguous—at once organic and industrial. The analog images are scanned, layered, and edited together, pulsing with a sense of materiality. Alongside them, Marcell introduces digital animations created in TVPaint. Inspired by deep sea life, microbes, and cellular forms, these fluid lines and movements add a surprising sense of organic vitality. Paradoxically, the hand-drawn analog images often appear more rigid, while the digitally animated shapes move with a lifelike, biological fluidity. The meet of analogue techniques with digital tools generates a subtle tension between media that is a vital part of the installation’s magic.
