Imagined islands is a durational, interactive exploration of changing landscapes that uses mapping and machine learning to create new generative large-scale topographic projections. By using satellite data from Irish and Danish islands, the project creates new, imagined landscapes that unfold in real time. The work invites the public to imagine alternative paths and landscapes that could have formed, using digital immersion as a catalyst to connect us more deeply to our surroundings.

Imagined islands is a project created by digital artist Leon Butler, in collaboration with Mads Vadsholt, and curated by PLASTIC Collective. It is part of the Viborg UNESCO Creative City Artist in Residency Program, facilitated in partnership with The Animation Workshop – Center For Digital Art And Sciences and the Viborg Animation Festival.

The showcase at VAF 2024 serves as a test exhibition, presenting the first step in the development of Imagined Islands—a demo of what is to come.
We hope to define the course of further development through interaction with the Viborg audience.
